Society expects a lot from teachers. This is because parents have a lot of dreams for their children. They cannot spare the time to fulfil them. The person they look to for fulfilment of their dreams is the teacher. I was a teacher-cum-parent when my children were growing so I could understand that. I decided that I would fit into those expectations. I gave my students all the academic experiences that I wished my own children to receive. This included student seminars for difficult topics like gerunds, infinitives etc. Role play was another strategy. It extended to writing and staging plays and dramas. This improved dialogue writing and direct speech. In this way activities served as learning points for challenging parts.</p> <p>A self-directed, sincere teacher is a Blessing of Heaven. I improved my methodologies by focussing on the ways and means to help students progress. Review and repair are crucial to quality. With each passing batch the approaches were fine tuned to achieve better results. Very often, the chief skill required was patience and gentleness. Experience provided the wisdom and I learnt to be sensitive to the learning needs of heterogeneous group of learners. Exceptional students needed different content while the average learner needed different material to stay motivated. Students were encouraged to make presentations and conduct seminars.</p> <p>I was awarded the prestigious 'Best teacher award' by the school management. The criteria for management awards are in some ways more direct and precise when compared to awards where one has to download an application form and fill in columns to prove that they deserve the award better than any other individual. That gave me the impetus to do even better. Above all, it was the urge to mould impressionable minds that nurtured my passion for teaching. My explanations are always crisp and loaded with information that illuminates young minds. The direct approach is the best approach. I take care not to stray away from the relevance to purpose. Picturesque examples are given, relevant to the topic, which enhance learning. The learner's confidence is built and then he is motivated to achieve higher.
